Edwin Donaldson sings “¿Que Será Del Caribe?” in the short documentary of the same name.
Dice que de San Jose viene un monstro (They say that a monster is coming from San Jose)
Va para el Caribe Sur (It’s headed to the Caribe Sur)
Viene a dejar sin trabajo a mi gente (It’s coming to leave my people without work)
Dejara desolación (It will leave desolation)
— ¿Que Será Del Caribe? by Edwin Donaldson
Eric Barstow, a second year student in Duke’s MFA in Experimental and Documentary Arts program, spent his summer directing ¿Que Será Del Caribe?, a short documentary on the imminent government takeover of land from the Afro Caribe people who live on the southern Caribbean coast (Caribe Sur) of Costa Rica, in the town of Puerto Viejo de Talamanca. Watch the film below.
¿Que Será Del Caribe? is a production of Actuality Media, a philanthropic production company that takes media students around the world to produce short documentaries “about individuals and organizations changing the world.” The company describes itself as a “for impact” organization that supports “filmmakers who want to create social purpose media.” Student crews do a thirty-day outreach on location, during which they research, write, film, and edit a story. In addition to Barstow, the ¿Que Será Del Caribe? crew included producer Chris Eastman, cinematographer Alexei Shishkin, and editor Tina Bradley.
